XY: How to Create Gender-blind Theatre

Professional Development WorkshopInspired by their acclaimed short play festival XY, Papercut Theatre’s Artistic Director, Melissa Dunne, will lead a short workshop on how you can create gender-blind characters and stories. Using simple techniques that strip away preconceptions about the roles of men and women, the workshop will look at and explore how gender informs actors’ understanding of character and impacts audience perception.

This workshop will be led by Papercut Theatre Artistic Director, Melissa DunneMelissa is a writer, director and dramaturg for theatre and has directed work in venues as diverse as Theatre503, Arcola Theatre, the Houses of Parliament and Royal Festival Hall. She has previously read scripts for the Soho Theatre, Ice & Fire, the Bush Theatre and is currently on the literary panel for the Royal National Theatre. As a writer her work has been produced at The Miniaturists, Arcola Theatre, Latitude Festival and Assembly Festival, Edinburgh Fringe. She is a visiting tutor at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and Middlesex University.
